Last years’ National winners
At last year’s National ONE Awards, 2 of our North West ONE award winners went on to be National winners: Coach of the Year (Adults): Joan Dunn (North West) Joan has played a pivotal role in her club's journey, guiding the squad to historic achievements, including securing Premiership promotion. A remarkable person, she deserves recognition for many years of selfless service to young people, senior players, and netball in general! She steps into training sessions, talks to players and parents, helps and nurtures new coaches, juggles spreadsheets to coordinate training slots and match courts and delivers coaching.
She also hires minibuses (often out of her own pocket), generates sponsorship when required and travels to all corners of the UK to support her teams! She is the epitome of going above and beyond for the sport. Community Official of the Year (in honour of Sheelagh Redpath): Sophie Pike (East) With over 30 years of involvement in netball, Sophie has served as an umpire and the dedicated officiating lead for their county. She is a qualified tutor, mentor, and assessor at IOA, C, and B levels who supports umpires of all abilities, including those with ADHD and dyslexia, showing patience, care, and a deep commitment to inclusivity. Inspired by a school project on how sport supports mental and physical wellbeing, these two incredible sisters turned their passion into action, creating the Wirral Primary School Netball Pledge. Their vision was simple but powerful: to make netball accessible to every child in every primary school across the Wirral.
They reached out to all 95 schools, encouraging them to teach netball from Year 1, appoint a netball lead, and give every pupil the chance to play. They produced their own resources linking schools to local clubs and inspired 23 schools and eight organisations to join their pledge, gaining support from the local council and even the Mayor of Wirral. Not content to just lead from afar, both sisters volunteer weekly, coaching at their former primary school and their club, Wirral Gems. Their drive, teamwork, and belief in the power of sport have created real opportunities for hundreds of young players. Together, they are true role models, showing that passion, purpose, and sisterhood can change the game for everyone.
