After winning the Murial McNally Award at the North West & West Midlands awards in November Pat Arnott was one of 8 regional winners competing for the England Netball National Award which recognises an “outstanding contribution to netball delivery at grass roots club level for a minimum of 10 years.”..and won!
Pat was delighted too be presented the award (virtually) by none other than Tracey Neville, who coached the Roses to win Gold at the Commonwealth games, their first major title, beating Australia in a thrilling final on the Gold Coast in April 2018. |
If you missed the event or just want to re-live the awards, you can watch on You Tube https://www.englandnetball.co.uk/get-involved/volunteers/celebrating-with-volunteers/2020-vitality-goalden-globe-netball-volunteer-awards/
Pat has been a PE teacher at Alsager High school for many years and set up Alsager Netball Club in 1997 where she has achieved success with teams competing and winning at County and Regional level. As a County coach Pat has also played her part in coaching National players, including England player Beth Cobden who was part of the “infamous 2018 Roses squad”.
Despite these achievements Pat is a grass roots coach and has inspired many young people to play netball and enjoy themselves. Children from the club as young as year 3 and 4 play in leagues including the Warrington Sports for all league on a Sunday.
“Pat is legend”, and I am quoting direct from the many comments Pat received on Facebook when England Netball chose her to be the poster girl of their Volunteer campaign earlier this year. After posting her photo on Facebook she received254 likes and 60 comments, most saying similar things like “a massive influence on my younger years “and “The reason I play! Thanks Mrs Arnott! X” “I am very proud to say that this lovely lady taught me so much at school and always brought the best out of our teams. Thank you and Congratulations Mrs Arnott xx “

Her dedication goes beyond running the club as she has encouraged many parents and children to become coaches and umpires both in Cheshire and in Staffordshire, where Pat has been Chair of the Stoke (adult) netball league which has over 50 teams competing on a Monday evening. Pat is totally “hands on” as she is herself a qualified umpire and has only recently retired from umpiring duties.
Always keeping up with new ideas Pat set up “Back to Netball “several years ago in Alsager and as a consequence 3 new ladies’ teams were formed who play competitively, and most recently she set up walking netball which was very popular.
Well before the words “wellbeing “and “mental health” became part of our everyday conversations, Pat recognised the benefits of club sports and has helped many young people get through their teenage years. Taking part in sport, belonging to a club and having a supportive community around you are all key to feeling OK... more now than ever, so let’s hope we can all be playing again soon #England Netball Rise Again

North West Chris Brien Performance Awards
We had 3 awards in recognition and memory of Chris Brien a Cheshire Head Coach who sadly passed away in 2017. She was a passionate and dedicated coach who inspired a generation of young athletes and these nominations are to individuals from the counties who have shown that determination, grit and courage to be the best they can be:
- Firstly Niamh Stephenson from Cheshire who has shown great work ethic and determination to come back after 6 months of injury. She is a talented athlete who gives 100% and is always looking for opportunities to improve whether it is her S & C or her tactical awareness on court. During lockdown she was very creative on designing drills and skills practices, seeking feedback from her coaches and using video analysis of several international fixtures to understand the roles and responsibilities of the WD (her favoured position).
- Secondly Lexi Simmons who was a member of Lancashire Under 13’s Academy programme for the 2019/20 season and has this season been successful for the Thunder pathway. Her attitude, leadership, training ethic and general all round ethos has assisted her to improve on her skills and strategic awareness of the game. She has captained her side and even though she was injured in the first game she continued to support from the side lines and is always positive in her feedback.
- And thirdly Ava Greenwood from Greater Manchester; who last year was a member of the Under 13’s academy programme and this year is part of Thunder Youth. Ava has shown a real ability to absorb and put into practice new skills and tactical instructions. She is willing and able to build on knowledge gained and apply it on court, learning with understanding. Ava is a very good athlete, with excellent balance and acceleration and excellent agility and mobility and surprising strength for one so slight. She is extremely dedicated and committed to training.
