PINK NETBALL WEEK 2013 IN COPELAND
Sunday 26th February 2012 was the beginning of the 3rd ever Pink Netball Week in the North West of England.
Pink Netball Week was created by Netball North West to raise awareness and money for Cancer Research UK/ Race for Life. Counties/ netball clubs/ teams and schools were given the challenge of putting on events to raise as much money as possible for this charity.
Cumbria and particularly Copeland really got behind Pink Week and there were brilliant events and ideas for players to be involved with.
The collection buckets were out on Tuesday evening for players to make donations when playing their matches in Copeland Netball League. Again lots of players turned out in pink – with headbands, ankle warmers, gloves etc. The players from Copeland Netball League raised a total of £85.02
Saturday 23rd March saw a Charity Netball Match played at Whitehaven Sports Centre – a team of students from Lakes College – all men took on Jumping Jacks Netball team from Division 2 in Copeland Netball League. The students have received a few weeks of basic coaching from Community Netball Coach Sonia Dryden as part of their Sports Course at the College. Tutor Andrew Beattie decided that as they had to learn a new team sport and the students on the course are predominately men – netball would be a perfect challenge!
The All Stars as they are now known took to the court despite never having played a netball match before. They displayed a really good knowledge of the game considering the length of time they have been playing and played well together.
The match consisted of 4 quarters of 10 minutes and the score at the end of the game was Jumping Jacks 27 All Stars 4 – player of the match for Jacks was Helen Kinrade C and for the All Stars was Jack Harrison. Jacks were impressed with the skill level of the All Stars Lakes College team and invited them for a re match any time.
All Stars team – Harvey Hogarth, Jack Harrison, Matthew Drinkwater, Anthony Burton, Callum Brannon, Lee Woolf & Andrew Brown – with guest appearances from Jamie Jardine & Derek Mellon.
Jumping Jacks Team – Samantha Mellon, Rosie Napier, Holly Wilbraham, Jenny Metcalf, Helen Kinrade, Gina Metcalf, Sarah Jardine & Val Metcalf.
Thanks as ever are extended to North Country Leisure for the use of the court and to Alison Renney who volunteered to umpire the match.
Sunday 24th March saw the culmination of events and the final event was to be the 3rd Back to Netball Festival to take place in Cumbria. North Country Leisure kindly supported the event which meant that the venue was free of charge. Word soon spread and there were 7 teams in the beginner section and 4 in the advanced section – 4 more teams than in previous years. However, with the severe weather conditions 2 teams from Millom and 1 team from Barrow could not attend on the day.
The festival was split into two categories - beginners for those who have been playing netball for less than a year and advanced for those teams that have been playing for more than a year but less than three. For some of the players taking part this is the first experience of competitive netball for many years if at all.
As the festival got under way it was encouraging to hear the different teams support each other and many laughs were had on court by players. The volunteer umpires were fantastic with the players and helped them along the way – coaching as well as umpiring. The umpires all commented how much the teams had improved as the festival went along and for those umpires who were involved in the previous years event saw a real improvement with those teams in the advanced section.
The results for the advanced section was:
This year the festival was dedicated to the memory of Jenny Sewell whose daughter Samantha Mellon is a committed netball player and volunteer.
All Sorts & Penrith Piranhas were presented with the trophies and a winners medal for each player by Samantha Mellon. There were also prizes for a player of the festival for each section – Louise Wilkin WD for Sands Centre was the player for the beginners section and Val Metcalf GS FOR All Sorts was selected for the advanced section. This event raised £450.73 with entry fees from teams, donations from players and T Shirt sales. Many thanks have to go to the Umpires and volunteers from Copeland Netball League for all their help on the day and for making the Festival a huge success – Kimberley Miller, Samantha Mellon, Paula Ratcliffe, Laura Gribbin, Belise Laws, Helen Kinrade & Jane Fox. Thanks are also extended to North County Leisure for the free facility and Cumbria County Netball Association for donating the trophies and medals.
