Emma Pike - A Award umpire
I am an active umpire who has lots of experience of umpiring from local league through to Senior Superleague games who is also a qualified tutor and assessor. I currently umpire in; local league which I am also chair of, county league, regional league, national premier league and the National Players League (NPL). I have also mentored other umpires over many years at different levels and am now involved in the North West mentoring programme.
What got you into Umpiring in the first instance?
I was playing for Knutsford Netball Club and the coach needed to leave to devote more time to her job as she had recently been promoted and so everyone looked to me to sort out the coaching and the umpiring. I have been doing both these roles ever since.
Why do you enjoy your role within netball umpiring?
I very much enjoy most aspects of netball from being on committees to playing. I still play at local league and county league levels. I follow netball all around the world. If it is available to watch then I will have watched it. Umpiring gives me a chance to experience many different levels of abilities, styles of play and of course ensures I have a sound knowledge of the rules of the game.
What would your one piece of advice to someone who was thinking about starting umpiring?
Games of netball couldn’t happen without us umpires so go out there and enjoy it. The best way to learn is by giving it a go.
