Debi Perkins - Experienced B Award Umpire
I would describe myself as a senior umpire who has lots of experience of umpiring grass roots through to Superleague games over my career.
I am currently an active B umpire covering NW Prem clubs in both the Regional league and junior clubs in the junior leagues. I also umpire for Manchester University 1st & 2nd teams in the BUCS league.
Although not a formal mentor I have been responsible for organising umpires for all Thunder trials for the last couple of years and we have used these opportunities to progress many of our umpires to the next level through coaching and feedback in a high performance
What got you into Umpiring in the first instance?
My daughter played netball at AGGS so I helped Kath Edwards and she gave me ample opportunities and encouragement to go forward with my umpiring.
Why do you enjoy your role within netball umpiring?
I Love netball full stop! I’m no longer a player so umpiring keeps me in the loop of netball …. I’m not attached to any club so I escape any club politics , I just dip in and out when I can be free .
What would your one piece of advice to someone who was thinking about starting umpiring?
Start umpiring at training sessions to gain confidence and knowledge of play, read the rules , always keep yourself updated with them and re-read them before you umpire any match. Quick decision making is key so knowing those rules and being able to implement them in those 3 seconds is the most important thing. Fitness is essential and knowledge of positioning, movement and timing can be learnt as you progress with the help of a mentor
